Chef’s Table at the Wine Vault Restaurant in Rovinj

Chef’s Table at the Wine Vault Restaurant in Rovinj

Over the years we have traditionally celebrated our anniversary at a nice restaurant but this year, 2.5 months into our world tour and with our 10th anniversary at hand, we looked for something truly special.

While we’ve been lucky enough to eat at a number of top restaurants around the world over the years, this was our first experience at a chef’s table. And what an experience! Thanks to Chef Andy Gaskin and the team at the Wine Vault for some fantastic and inventive dishes, delicious wines and a unique behind-the-scenes look at an elite kitchen. We sat in a small private alcove (formerly the wardrobe) mere feet from the action and immediately in front of the “pass”. The meal was an ongoing dialogue with the team including a tour of the kitchen, explanations of ingredients and cooking methods, and a few useful tips that we hope to try at home. We even got to eavesdrop as Chef Andy planned an off-menu request from the President of Moldova Nicolae Timofti and his wife (yes, that’s right, we just named dropped the President of Moldova).

A true culinary marathon, we made our way through 19 courses, 5 different Croatian wines, and (as if we needed it at that point) 3 kinds of grappa to round off the night. We also got a real kick out of being guinea pigs for a new (and very unique) dish – a foie gras ice cream bar. All in all, 5 hours (including 2 much needed breaks) later, we can safely say this was one of our very best food experiences. One that we will never forget.

Definitely satisfied. We were so full that we had a tough time walking home. We were already reaching our limits when we were presented with the Argentinian T-bone, but how can you pass that up? Then came the picnic style confit of salmon followed by smoke infused lamb chops (see flaming picture above) and then 5 deserts on top of that. We were pleasantly exhausted by the end of it all.

What a dinner! Kristina looks great in the photo with her amused glance at what looks to me like a plant in a pot. Since it’s near the end of the sequence, was is a dessert?
